NAVIGATION TRAINING & HILL SKILLS

Develop your confidence and expertise through navigation training to safely enjoy walking in the hills and mountains of the UK.

Navigation Courses & Hill Skills

These are courses designed to boost your confidence and help you push your boundaries. We’ll provide you with the skills to walk safely in Britain’s countryside and mountainous areas and give you plenty of opportunities to practise the map and compass navigation training and skills.

Our courses are delivered in a relaxed and informal fashion with the focus being on practical learning in the outdoors. You will also get to experience some stunning Welsh countryside.  With training provided at two different levels Introduction to Navigation & Wilderness Navigation – there is something for everyone.

Feel free to get in touch and discuss which course would suit you best.

Our courses normally run in the hills of mid-Wales but suitable alternative venues can be arranged in other parts of the country if requested.

Please contact us for group bookings.

Before booking your place on any of our navigation courses, please ensure you read our terms and conditions.

Introduction to Navigation

This 1-day navigation training course is suitable for those new to hill walking, or who have always relied on someone else to take the lead. You will learn a number of map reading skills such as how to interpret maps including symbols, contour lines, grid references and scales, then discover how to relate the map to the landscape and walk a planned route.

You will also look at what clothing and equipment you might need and what to do in case of an emergency.

Wilderness Navigation

Our 1-day Wilderness Navigation course is aimed at those who already have some hill walking experience and at least a basic understanding of the use of map and compass.  This course will build on those foundations and take you to some more demanding upland ‘wild’ terrain.  Amongst other things you will look at the use of the compass, detailed map interpretation (including navigating by contour features), estimating distance travelled, micro-navigation and route selection.

You’ll also look at how to hone your clothing and equipment and consider what to do in case of an emergency in a remote location.

Night Navigation

Develop your ability to navigate at night or in poor visibility on our short evening course.  This CPD training event takes place in the Elan Valley, mid-Wales.

£35 + VAT (£42)

You’ll learn what strategies to employ and hone your techniques to navigate confidently in poor visibility as well as looking at the appropriate equipment to use.

  • Hone your map and compass skills
  • Discover techniques for walking in low visibility
  • Learn how your eyes work best at night
  • Use the moon and stars to find direction

TESTIMONIALS

"My daughter absolutely LOVED the Creative Crafts course, thank you! She particularly liked the fact that you taught and trusted them to use tools properly, and I loved the fact that all of the activities were so unique, and nothing she'd have done anywhere else.

She also mentioned that she thought Nicky, the instructor, was great.

It was obviously brilliantly organised, and she will definitely be signing up to future courses!"
